Why Should Federal Government Agents be Able to Plea the Fifth?

If only our founding fathers could see us now.  I bet they would be shocked to learn that freedom loving Americans would allow a tax collecting agency the ability to codify political speech and monitor our health care choices.  Would incredulity be the right word?

One thing I’m sure they wouldn’t be surprised by is the outright corruption and abuses of a government agency that has the power to destroy our lives.  Tax collectors weren’t beloved community organizers during the revolutionary period.  Some were beaten, tarred and feathered and had their property destroyed.  And without a doubt, many of those revenuers had the disposition of a Lois Lerner.

When our Constitution was ratified by the States, delegates demanded a bill of rights as a means to protect their citizens from abuses by a central government and their agents.  Now we have one of their oprichnikis pleading the Fifth Amendment.

Lois Lerner, an IRS operative, used her office to harass and intimidate persons and political organizations she disagreed with.  Incriminating emails substantiate these charges.  This corruption extends all the way to Washington D.C.  The commissioner of the IRS refuses to hand over documents to Congress.  We can only assume it leads to the White House.

Considering that the Bill of Rights was designed to limit the powers of the federal government, we must ask ourselves why one of their agents is entitled to plead the fifth, especially in cases where there has been a demonstrated abuse of power.   After all, wasn’t the Bill of Rights designed to protect us from them?
