Rules and Laws Do Not Apply To Democrats

John Adams once said that we are a nation of laws, not of men. He would be astounded to find out the reverse is true today.

The democrats have flaunted both law and rules with unabashed shamelessness. Currently, they are considering pushing through a parliamentary rule called reconciliation, so as to pass a major piece of legislation, that would have profound affect upon every citizen of this country. Reconciliation was meant for budgetary items; not major policy issues.

No one should be surprised by the conduct of these people. Democrats have a long history of disregarding the Constitution, and the very laws that they, themselves have passed. I will recount just a couple of the most recent affronts.

During the 2002 senatorial election New Jersey democrat, Bob Torricelli won his parties nomination. He was defending his second term in office against the republican nominee Doug Forrester. Sen. Torricelli ran into ethical problems from a convicted Korean businessman who made allegations against the senator for accepting illegal campaign contributions and gifts, which were not reported.

Election Day was fast approaching. The stench of Torricelli’s corruption began to show in the polls as he lost ground to Forrester. The Democratic Party panicked; forcing Torricelli to step down from the party’s nomination in favor of retired senator, Frank Lautenberg. There was only one problem. The deadline for ballot changes had long passed according to New Jersey state law.

The Republican Party filed suit. It went all the way to the New Jersey Supreme Court where these rogue justices ruled unanimously in favor of the democrats. The law was quite clear. They justified their ruling by saying that leaving Torricelli on the ballot gave an unfair advantage to Forrester. And they wonder why people have lost faith in our courts.

President George W. Bush’s judicial nominees were filibustered. The democrats did not adhere to Article II Section II in the advice and consent clause. A simple majority is all that is required, but the democrats used senate rules to obstruct nominees who they thought might adhere to the Constitution; setting again another precedent. And again violating their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution.

Republican Senator Jim Bunning the other day held up a bill that would extend unemployment and subsidize COBRA health care benefits for 30 days. The Senator was just enforcing the “Pay As You Go” law that this very congress passed just last year. The good Senator wanted to know how they were going to pay for this:

"If we cannot pay for a bill that all 100 senators support, how can we tell the American people with a straight face that we will ever pay for anything? That is what senators say they want, and that is what the American people want."

The democrats and their toadies in the media pounced; calling Senator Bunning everything but a human being; and as can be predicted, the RINOS joined in.

How dare this man have the effrontery to enforce the laws that this very congress just passed? Doesn’t he know that laws mean nothing to them? Doesn’t he know that laws do not apply to the exalted political class?

Senator Bunning relented. The democrats beat him until he got his mind right. Re-education can be a bitch.
