Barack Obama Wants a Bureaucrat in Every Pot. Or Should I Say Home?

Herbert Hoover – A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage

The Community Organizer-in-Chief can’t go a day without demeaning the private sector. According to the Anointed One, Americans couldn’t be successful without a government bureaucrat in every pot. Or should I say home?

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

Have you ever noticed that when someone succeeds, it’s always “WE” with this guy? But when “HIS” administration fails, it’s “Bush’s Fault.” What is really disconcerting is America’s fortunes are dependent on the policies of a narcissist who resents others success. God help us if he wins another term.

Obama Administration Played the Fool by North Korean Regime

Here we are again being played the fool by the North Koreans. The Obama administration hasn’t learned the lessons of the past, and we will once again give them tons of food for a promise that they will not keep. What’s worse, their new leader purposefully made a visit to the South Korean border to shake his pudgy, little fist at his neighbor:

SEOUL, South Korea -- The North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, visited the heavily armed border with South Korea on Sunday and ordered his troops on higher alert, escalating his militaristic rhetoric in spite of American calls to improve ties with the South just a week after his country agreed to a nuclear freeze in return for badly needed food aid.

Kim has been hailed as the North's leader since the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, in December, and has frequently visited frontline military units. But his trip to Panmunjon, a compound straddling the border where the armistice ending the Korean War was signed in 1953, was the first time he had put himself in full view -- and within the range -- of South Korean border guards.

"If there is a fight erupting, our military and people will have the enemy kneeling before us to sign not a truce this time but a document of surrender," Kim was quoted by the North's news agency.

The agreement that North Korea struck last week with the United States calls for it to suspend its nuclear weapons tests and uranium enrichment and allow international inspectors to monitor activities at its main nuclear complex, in exchange for 240,000 tons of food aid from Washington.

I guess we will never learn from our mistakes. This isn’t the first time the United States propped up one her enemies by giving aid to their people. When the Bolsheviks took over Tsarist Russia, their brutal policies – coupled with a civil war – caused millions to die of starvation; some resorted to cannibalism. Children were locked up for fear of being eaten. In October of 1921, it was estimated that 16 million people would perish, if aid didn’t come to Russia.

The Great Famine caught the eye of one of America’s great humanitarians: Herbert Hoover. Hoover was Secretary of Commerce during the Harding administration. He was also director of the American Relief Administration. It was under his insistence that Congress approve shipments of aid. Here is an excerpt from American Experience:

The ARA campaign in Russia would be the largest relief operation to date. And the first to provide relief to an adversary. The challenge was to get the food almost halfway around the world where up to 100,000 Russians were dying every week.

America's surplus corn and wheat seed began to move quickly from the heartland to the holds of ocean-going freighters. The first relief ships left New York in mid-January 1922 carrying 300,000 tons of grain.

The task before the ARA workers in Russia was Herculean. During the child feeding, the ARA had divided Russia into ten districts. Each had an American supervisor and a small staff of Americans. Once again, these relief workers set off into the far corners of their districts estimating the new needs, arranging for more warehouses to store 20 million bushels of corn and thousands of tons of seed, and directing the village committees to identify starving adults for the expanded relief. They traveled over the flat expanses of the Russian steppes for silent days in crude sleighs, by train if they could find a private car. Their greatest physical threat was typhus, spread by lice.

The ARA’s efforts in Russia was strictly humanitarian and had unintended consequences. Lenin and the Bolsheviks consolidated power, while the Americans fed their people. The Soviet regime would last for decades. These communist dogs brutalized and murdered millions, until their fall in the late 1980’s. So, here we are again, feeding another communist regime’s people, while they consolidate power under another brutal dictator.

The Three Myths of the Great Depression

The Great Depression was a seminal moment in our nation’s history. This event changed our nation and the way Americans look at government. The progressives/liberals romanticize FDR and his compassion for the little people. We’ve all heard it: Herbert Hoover did nothing to help the economy. FDR saved capitalism. World War II brought us out of the depression.

Well guess what. It’s all a bunch of lies. Hoover was a big interventionist. He proposed and enacted government programs that prohibited the market to correct itself. Many of those laws were repeated by presidents Bush and Obama during our recent financial crisis. The assertion that FDR saved capitalism is laughable. He was just as antagonistic to businesses as the Anointed One. And the myth that World War II brought us out of the Great Depression has been debunked. We didn’t get out of that disaster until 1947 – 48.

It’s going to take a lot of patience to rid the American people of these myths; or until Paul Krugman’s alien invasion theory comes to pass.

AFL-CIO President Uses Depression Era Rhetoric

AFL-CIO President Richard L. Trumka gave a speech today in Columbus, Ohio at the union’s annual convention. He delivered a hate filled rant blaming Republicans, businesses, insurance companies, banks, and just about anyone who is not a socialist like him:

“Some of our politicians and some of America’s biggest corporations have given up on America. Companies are sitting on $837 billion without creating jobs,” Trumka will say. “Banks are clutching a trillion dollars in profits without lending to small businesses and consumers. Too many companies aren’t investing in the future, or in the country that made them great. All they want to do is scrape every ounce of flesh from our hides — for their profit.”

“Well I say that is economic treason!” Trumka says.

“The big health insurance companies — the same ones that racked up tens of billions in profits last year and paid their CEOs megabucks — they say they need premium increases of 20 percent or more for no reason at all – except guess what? Greed,” Trumka will continue. “That’s economic treason!”

The barking by Obama’s ankle biter reminds me a lot of the attitude and rhetoric of progressive politicians in the 1930’s. Herbert Hoover felt the same way as Trumka. When federal, state and local taxes rose sharply, the pain was hard to bear for both businesses and families. No one was willing to invest.  Jim Powell’s book FDR’s Folly describes Hoover’s attitude:

To protect themselves, people increasingly held on to whatever money they had, and Hoover thought that was unpatriotic. He denounced “hoarders” for threatening America’s credit system.

Jim Powell then goes on to describe the hostility by FDR and Congress and the consequences that had on businesses:

Employers were wary of long term risks, one of which was a president and congress threatening those with “idle” capital to invest. Many economists then and now recognize how bashing employers can destroy jobs. Joseph Schumpeter wrote in his 1939 book Business Cycles that employers felt threatened: “They realize that they are on trial before judges who have the verdict in their pocket beforehand, that an increasing part of public opinion is impervious to their point of view, and that any particular indictment will, if successfully met, at once be replaced by another. Again, we may differ in our estimates of the importance of both of this factor and the functions it tends to paralyze, but is should not be overlooked.

Many began to think that FDR had become a Keynesian:

Naturally, all this further alarmed the business community, undermining the confidence of anybody who might have contemplated making long-term investments. As bad news continued to come in, increasing numbers of people demanded that the government get off their backs, starting with tax cuts. FDR would hear none of it, since he fought hard to raise taxes during the depression.

And with Obama, so it was with FDR:

Apparently people were becoming weary of FDR’s class-warfare rhetoric and his attacks on “economic royalists”; in addition, there was increasing support for tax relief.

Barack Obama, Richard Trumka and all the other socialist are reading from the same old and tired playbook. It’s too bad that they haven’t learned from their demigod’s mistakes.
