U.S. Dept of Labor: Workers of the World Unite!

American workers (what’s left of us) can take pride in knowing that not only are we subsidizing our fellow countrymen through government welfare programs; we’re also financing labor unions in foreign countries.  The defunct International Workers of the World would’ve been proud to witness this moment.  Too bad this Marxist organization suffered an ignominious death when their leaders were expelled to the workers’ paradise of Lenin’s Soviet Union.  Congratulations Progressives, you’ve accomplished what generations of Americans have fought against:  a redistribution of wealth to the world’s proletariat.
(CNSNews.com) - Labor Secretary Hilda Solis on Thursday announced a $2.2 million grant that will be used to strengthen budding labor unions in Haiti and Peru.

The taxpayer money will fund projects organized by the AFL-CIO's Solidarity Center, which aims to build a global labor union movement.
"Supporting the ability to organize and protect their rights is important to leveling the playing field for all workers," Solis said in a news release. "This grant will help organizations in Haiti and Peru engage in productive, effective negotiations with governments and employers on behalf of vulnerable workers."

In Haiti, the Solidarity Center will work with the apparel export sector, focusing particularly on issues related to freedom of association (the right to unionize), sexual harassment and forced overtime.

In Peru, the project will focus on the needs of temporary and fixed-term contract workers.
Just last week, the Labor Department awarded $35 million to address child labor in seven countries in Africa, Latin America and Indonesia.

Since 1995, the Labor Department's Bureau of International Labor Affairs has worked with other governments and international organizations to “ensure that workers around the world are treated fairly and are able to share in the benefits of the global economy.”

Democrats Banish the American Work Ethic to the Reservation

A culture of dependency is the keystone of the Democratic Party. Obama’s shock troops are leading the assault on a good work ethic. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis has outlawed an American tradition of kids working on farms. Many recognize the value of hard work, and are fretting what this means for future generations.

In Kansas, Cherokee County Farm Bureau president Jeff Clark was out in the field — literally on a tractor — when TheDC reached him. He said if Solis’s regulations are implemented, farming families’ labor losses from their children will only be part of the problem.

“What would be more of a blow,” he said, “is not teaching our kids the values of working on a farm.”

The Environmental Protection Agency reports that the average age of the American farmer is now
over 50.

“Losing that work-ethic — it’s so hard to pick this up later in life,” Clark said. “There’s other ways to learn how to farm, but it’s so hard. You can learn so much more working on the farm when you’re 12, 13, 14 years old.”

And a good work ethic is the last thing a democratic politician wants your children to learn. We’ve entered a new era where food stamps and a government check are as laudable as having a job. Basically, the bureaucratic state needs to expand their tentacles. They want all of us on the reservation, in a state of dependency.

Look at the American Indian. The Department of the Interior purposefully torpedoed the success of these luckless tribes. The reason being, it would’ve been the death of a government agency. Forbes.com reported the following:

Any effort at land reform must go through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. But the bureau, originally part of the War Department and one of the federal government’s oldest agencies, isn’t about to pave the way for its own demise by signing off on an effort to privatize reservation land. The bureau faced this situation before: Under the 1887 Dawes Act, land could be allotted to individual Indians, but by 1934 so much land had been privatized that Congress reversed course and communal tribal property was back in favor. “Allotment threatened the bureau so it had an incentive to end the process,” says Dominic Parker, an economics professor at Montana State University. In any event, tribal councils wouldn’t be keen to give up the patronage and power that controlling vast amounts of land gives them. And the $2.5 billion a year that Washington spends on programs for Native Americans is a powerful deterrent to change. “For the bureau and other narrow interests, staying with the convoluted system of land ownership is safer than improving property rights,” he says. The bureau declined to comment.

Once the work ethic is lost, it’s hard to get back. As one tribal member states:

“Privatizing land is fine but it falls far short of the answer,” says Yellowtail. “Our people don’t understand business. After 10 or 15 generations of not being involved in business, they’ve lost their feel for it. Capitalism is considered threatening to our identity, our traditions. Successful entrepreneurs are considered sell-outs, they’re ostracized. We have to promote the dignity of self-sufficiency among Indians. Instead we have a culture of malaise: ‘The tribe will take care of us.’ We accept the myth of communalism. And we don’t value education. We resist it.”

The United Nations Human Rights Council is scheduled to investigate the plight of the U.S. indigenous population. I wonder if they’ll question the role of the Interior Department. In another 50 years, this same agency will probably investigate the plight of the American farmer.

Secretary Hilda Solis Believes Thuggery is a Virtue When Fairness is Applied

The Obama administration is all about fairness. And they’re going to make damn sure their brand of “fairness” will be exacted, whether we like it or not. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis articulated her definition of “fairness” at an Al Sharpton sponsored convention in Washington D.C.:

“It’s about fairness,” Secretary Solis said while explaining President Obama’s re-election platform. “It’s about fairness in the workplace; it’s about fairness in education; and it’s about fairness in terms of what services are provided by government. And if we can’t have say-so in that, then this isn’t the dream that all of us have aspired to be a part of.”

“If people aren’t paying their taxes, those that can afford it, the billionaires and millionaires — even the folks as you’ve heard yesterday that were in the White House that agreed to pay more. They want to pay more because they know it’s their obligation!” she added:

“That’s why he’s putting forward an agenda that says he wants to see an America, an America that helps every single one of us. Not those that are privileged, not those that can afford fancy lawyers and lobbyists but people, everyday people.”

“An America, as he says it, that is built to last for every single one of us and our children and our grandchildren,” she added.

The Labor Secretary continued:

President Obama has said that in the face of our challenges we’re going to have to answer a central question as a country: can we succeed as a country where a shrinking number of people do increasingly well while a growing number struggle to get by?

Or are we better off when everyone gets a fair shot and everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same rules?

That is what is at the heart of this national debate that the president has brought us into –and the other side of the aisle — because this is where we know we have to go. We have to have this discussion.

[...]
So I want to ask you if you’re going to help us march again. I want to ask you if you’re going to help us organize and I want to make sure that we’re accountable and that we are out there and that we not just fire ourselves up, you know, get excited, but I mean that we give it all that we got.

Who knew that thuggery is a virtue, when fairness is applied? Progressives are notorious for co-opting words and distorting the language. Let’s take a look at the definition of fairness by the American Heritage Dictionary:

1) free of obstacles
2) free of favoritism or bias; impartial
3) just to all parties; equitable
4) Consistent with rules, logic, or ethics

I don’t believe Secretary Solis had any of the above in mind when she made her speech. Wait a minute. I didn’t look down far enough in the dictionary. I do believe this is what her definition of fairness is:

Lawful to hunt or attack: fair game

Yes, that is more like it.

Secretary Of Labor Hilda Solis Issues Treaties Without Consent of the Senate

The Obama administration strikes again. Leave it to these statist scumbags to completely subvert the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law. What is the latest offense? Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis has been signing treaties with foreign governments without the advice and consent of the United States Senate:

(CNSNews.com) - U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis today signed "partnership" agreements with ambassadors from a group of Latin American nations aiming to protect what she described as the labor rights of both legal and illegal migrants working in the United States.

During the signing ceremony hosted at Labor Department headquarters in Washington D.C., Solis said the agreements are aimed at educating migrant workers, regardless of how they got here, about their rights under U.S. law and to help prevent them from being abused in the workplace, either through wages, loss of job, or deportation.

When asked by CNSNews.com, she made clear the agreements aim at protecting both documented and undocumented workers inside the United States.

Notice the operative words used: “partnership agreements”. Again, the English language is being abused by the progressives. Now let’s take a look at the word "treaty" under the American Heritage Dictionary:

Treaty: a formal agreement between two or more states containing terms of trade, peace, alliance, or the like; a pact

Is not a partnership agreement the same as a treaty between two or more states?

Now let’s take a look at the U.S. Constitution, Article II Section II:

He shall have the power, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, to make treaties, provided two-thirds of the senators present concur…

I don’t believe the Senate approved these treaties. We have just witnessed a coup by the Obama bureaucratic machine.

Secretary Solis Defends Unions and Illegal Aliens

Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis just had to interject herself into the state of Wisconsin’s dispute with the labor unions. At the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting, she said the following as reported by the Politico:

“The fight is on,” Labor Secretary Hilda Solis told the closing session of the DNC gathering at the Marriott Wardman Park hotel Saturday morning. “We work together. We help those embattled states right now where public employees are under assault.

Solis, a former congresswoman from California, got cheers and multiple standing ovations for her remarks blasting Walker and other Republican governors who seek to weaken government workers’ collective bargaining rights.

“We know many states are facing tough budget decisions,” she said. “We know there’s room for shared sacrifice — shared sacrifice. We’ve seen our brothers and sisters in public employee unions willingly give up their fair share. … The governors of Wisconsin and Ohio aren’t just demanding that they tighten their belts, they’re demanding that they give up their uniquely American rights as workers.”

Where in the hell have they sacrificed? They live better than the rest of us.

Solis loves socialist and illegal aliens. During a visit in Charlotte, North Carolina she attended a meeting that a local builder gave to construction workers. The meeting consisted of two groups: one that spoke English and the other Spanish. That’s right; she attended a meeting in which illegal aliens were given instruction on how to adhere to OSHA safety codes.

You’re wondering how I know this. An associate of mine was at that meeting, and he wasn’t one of the illegals.

Secretary Solis Nullifies Immigration Laws

It's bad enough that we have sanctuary cities, but now we have elements in the federal government who have no regard for our immigration laws.

How many times have we heard liberals scream from the top of their lungs about the insidiousness of state nullification. They harken back to the times of pre-civil war era and bite their fingernails whenever the states start to stick up for themselves.

It is not the states who are nullifying federal laws; it is cities and now we have government agencies such as the Department of Labor who are giving the American people the finger.

Secretary Solis made a taxpayer funded public announcement where she stated the following:

“I’m here to tell you that your president, your secretary of labor, and this department will not allow anyone to be denied his or her rightful pay — especially when so many in our nation are working long, hard and often dangerous hours,”

“We can help, and we will help. If you work in this country, you are protected by our laws. And you can count on the U.S. Department of Labor to see to it that those protections work for you.”

She further states:

"We're protecting all workers regardless of migration status, because that's the federal law."

The federal law protects illegal aliens?

Secretary Solis's parents were immigrants. I don't know if they came here legally, but with her attitude towards our immigration laws, I seriously doubt it. The problem with people like Solis is that they have more fidelity to their ethnicity than they do to their citizenship.
