Senator Chuck Schumer Declares Christians Shouldn't Own Businesses

A couple of years ago, I flippantly wrote, Democrats would eventually declare Christians shouldn’t own a business.  Your enterprise and your conscience isn’t your own once you enter the public sphere.  How be damned if they didn’t do it.  Senator Chuck Schumer stated the following:

“You’re born with a religion or you adopt a religion. You have to obey the precepts of that religion and the government gives you a wide penumbra – you don’t have to form a corporation,” Schumer said.

He further stated:

“When we wrote RFRA back in 1993 we did so to protect individuals with strong religious beliefs and give them the presumption they have always enjoyed. That they should be able to exercise their religious beliefs without interference from the government”, Schumer said.
“The court took that and applied it – misapplied it – to for-profit companies who exist for the purpose of benefitting from the open market, working in the marketplace under our laws.”
“We wouldn’t tell the owners of Hobby Lobby to convert to a different religion or disobey their religion  - but we don’t say that they have to open up a company and go sell toys or hobby kits.”

What business is not for profit?  Even so-called non-profits can’t operate without a profit.  WTF?  Besides that, who in the hell does Chuck Schumer think he is, our lord and master?  Don’t look now; Massa Schumer is coming down from the D.C. big house.  You Christians had better straighten up, or Massa Super Genius will tar your hide.

The Eternal Sunshine of an Eclipsed Liberal Mind

A famous radio talk show host has frequently stated that it’s easy being a liberal.  You don’t have to defend your policies when it’s based on feelings.  Occasionally, one will come up with solutions, but as usual, their thought processes are flawed.  The Charlotte Observer frequently demonstrates this sunshine of the eclipsed mind.

Last Friday, the Disturber featured a special by a volunteer at an agency that helps homeless families.  His article was filled with stories of the unfortunate, and of course we can all commiserate, but the solutions he proposed are contributing factors to poverty and a declining middle class.  Here is an excerpt:

What can be done?

Key factors of homelessness are lack of education, lack of skills training, lack of affordable healthcare, unmanageable family size, a limited network of friends/ family, too much debt and a low minimum wage. We need to continue and increase funding in our community college programs to enable homeless adults to get GEDs, develop skills and go to college. We need to identify and keep homeless kids in schools.

We need to increase the minimum wage; low-wage jobs perpetuate poverty. A living wage for one person in Charlotte is $9.67 an hour and the living wage for a mother with one child is $17.68 an hour. We need to connect people with better job opportunities. We need to continue forward with the Affordable Care Act, and the states who have not expanded Medicaid need to do so. And, we need to make birth control and education more accessible to manage family sizes.

We need to help people climb the ladders out of poverty. Don’t do for them what they can do for themselves, unless it is truly an emergency such as the family has been evicted. Once the emergency subsides, help them climb a ladder.

Alright, let’s address each one of his proposals.  Yes, education and experience is a factor in success.  You can obtain as many degrees as your heart desires, but it doesn’t guarantee a job, especially when federal and state governments are openly hostile to businesses.   The consequence is a bunker mentality. And the end result is a highly educated, unemployed person.

Raising the minimum wage to a “living wage” is another canard.  When businesses are forced to pay a higher wage, they in turn raise prices and/or let people go.  A minimum wage is an introductory wage for low-skilled workers learning a trade.  It shouldn’t be considered optimal pay.  Another consequence of raising the minimum wage is its inflationary aspect.  It is basically an indirect tax on goods and services that harms the poor.

The Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, is also responsible for unemployment.  How many times have we read or heard of businesses cutting back on hours of employees, or halting expansion because of this abomination.  This law is anything but affordable.  Repealing this monstrosity would greatly improve the economy.  As a matter of fact, government regulations cost businesses about $2 trillion annually.  Is that not a regressive tax that hurts the poor?

Good intentions and government regulations don’t provide jobs, or a “living wage.”  Entrepreneurs don’t create businesses because Johnny is unemployed.  They do it because they see a need for their services or product.  Hiring is a byproduct of their success.

Yes, we all must do something about poverty.  But let’s keep things in perspective.  Feelings never provided a job, or prosperity for a family.  And neither will burdensome government regulations and failed policies.

Obama Seeks to Limit the Movement of American Businesses and Citizens

Americans pride themselves on the premise that they are a free people able to move from town to town, and state to state without the permission from federal bureaucrats. That premise of freedom is being challenged by the Obama Administration. Boeing has decided to open a factory in South Carolina, which is a right to work state. The unions are not happy with this decision and have decided to pull some favors from Washington D.C. in order stop them; as reported by the Washington Examiner:

Can federal bureaucrats tell a private company where to build a factory?

Members of President Obama's National Labor Relations Board think they can. In a decision that even the New York Times is describing as "highly unusual for the federal government," Lafe Solomon, who was appointed to the board by Obama, filed a complaint on behalf of the NLRB on Wednesday seeking to force the Boeing Co. to build an assembly line in Washington state instead of South Carolina.

Boeing has had problems with the labor unions for years. South Carolina is a business friendly state and its citizens are an independent people that have a history of rejecting collectivism. Obama’s core constituents are the labor unions. And this president has had enough of his voting bloc being diminished:

That's when Boeing chose South Carolina, a right-to-work state where, unlike Washington, workers are not forced to join unions. As a result of this policy, only 6.2 percent of South Carolinians belong to unions. Construction of Boeing's new Charleston factory is nearly complete, and the company has already hired more than 1,000 new employees, drawn mostly from within the immediate region. And back in Washington, Boeing has actually increased employment at its Puget Sound plant by 2,000 workers. But that isn't good enough for the IAM or the Obama White House. After suffering major defeats in Wisconsin and Ohio, the labor movement is looking for a scalp. Obama's NLRB is trying to turn Boeing into one.

If Obama and the labor unions win this fight, our liberties are truly at stake; when people and businesses lose the ability of movement, than we have truly descended into tyranny.

Charlotte's A-Team Raids Jackalope Jacks

Charlotte has a new elite enforcement squad: The Nuisance Response Team. This highly skilled code enforcement team will shake your business down at peak hours. Rob Nixon, owner of Jackalope Jacks experienced the shit end of a pencil pushing bureaucrat:

After his restaurant was inspected Friday night by a team of ALE agents, police officers, and a city code enforcer, Jackalope Jack's owner Rob Nixon tells NewsChannel 36 he expects he'll receive violations for having both skeeball and karaoke in his popular bar.

Nixon says he knows this because the code enforcement officer told him so when he asked why he was taking pictures of his skeeball machines during the late night visit.

"I've always been the bear in the cave, saying, 'it's not my problem, it's not my problem,' but the city came into my cave and soiled on my fur and I'm not happy about it," he said Monday night.

Rob Nixon, the Elizabeth Community pusher of skeeball and karaoke, is unaware of his enabling influence of wannabe American Idol dreamers. If the A-Team wants to hand out nuisance fines, please do so to those who can’t sing. It would be a steady revenue stream for the city.

Union Thugs Threaten Wisconsin Businesses and Donors

Union thugs are threatening Wisconsin businesses with boycotts. Emails have been sent to public employee’s instructing them to hand out placards that display the union solidarity logo to local businesses to put in store front windows, or else:

“All public employees are being urged to look for this sign in business windows.”

From the Union Rep: “I encourage you to utilize your own business contacts and urge them to hang this prominently in their window. The explanation that I’ve found works best if they are apprehensive is that this is about local dollars, not politics. If our buying power is destroyed—their business will be affected adversely. Please let your area lead know which businesses you get to participate so that they might compile a list to distribute to the members.”

The County Employee also received an email with the Union “Business Card” and was instructed to “make copies of the business cards” and “distribute to each business where you spend money.”

Now, these union goons are directly contacting donors, threatening them with retribution:

Obama Tells Chamber of Commerce How to Run Their Businesses

How many businesses has Obama owned or ran?  The answer is none.  I find it amusing that he can lecture people on something he absolutely knows nothing about.  Arrogance coupled with power and inexperience is a bad formula.

Of course, your responsibility goes beyond recognizing the need for certain standards and safeguards. If we’re fighting to reform the tax code and increase exports to help you compete, the benefits can’t just translate into greater profits and bonuses for those at the top. They should be shared by American workers, who need to know that expanding trade and opening markets will lift their standard of living as well as your bottom line.

We cannot go back to the kind of economy – and culture – we saw in the years leading up to the recession, where growth and gains in productivity just didn’t translate into rising incomes and opportunity for the middle class.

Like Obama's policies have translated into rising incomes and opportunity for the middle class.  We Americans are so lucky to have a president with community service experience.  My wallet is flush with the new kind of economy and culture that has been foisted upon us.  Nothing beats the know how of an Ivy League theoretician.
