Obama Admin.Corrupts College Education

Anyone who gives a damn is wondering why the cost of a college education is so expensive.  Well here is an explanation worth contemplating.

The federal government happily subsidizes inferior state colleges that graduate few if any of their students. That includes Chicago State University, which has a 12.8 percent six-year graduation rate.

The Obama administration has rewritten federal student loan rules in a way that encourages colleges to raise tuition and effectively subsidizes the worst colleges the most. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that each additional dollar in government financial aid results in a tuition hike of about 65 cents.

The federal government also subsidizes expensive, low-quality third-tier law schools whose graduates are often unemployed. It does so even though many of their graduates will never pay back their student loans because of their low graduating salaries, and the huge amount of money law students are allowed to borrow from the government. . . . As the Cato Institute’s Neal McCluskey notes, ITT Tech produced better graduating salaries for its students than nearby public alternatives. But no one is suggesting that those lousy public colleges be shut down.

Frontline recently aired a documentary about for-profit colleges and how they were scamming the system; however, they didn’t touch on public universities.  And as you can expect, Democratic politicians deflected their culpability onto the evil private sector.  Unfortunately, we will never see a documentary showcasing their corruption of higher education.

N.C. Newspaper Editors Demand College Education for Illegal Aliens

What is it about these libtards at our local newspapers?  Do they not know what’s going on throughout the rest of the country?  Recently, the Winston-Salem Journal published an editorial, demanding that illegal aliens have the ability to attend colleges in North Carolina.  They naively believe that citizens wouldn’t be displaced, and that these invaders would pay out-of-state tuition fees.  Any thinking person knows better.  Here is what’s happening in California:

More than 20,000 college-bound students are seeking state financial aid for the first time under California's new Dream Act laws that allow them to get the help despite their immigration status.

While far from a complete picture, that number is the best indicator yet of how many students hope to benefit from a pair of laws that could radically change the college experience for a generation of students whose parents brought them to the U.S. illegally when they were young -- the same group that has taken center stage in the national immigration reform debate.

"For many of them, it's a game-changer," said Meng So, who coordinates UC Berkeley's months-old Undocumented Student Program.

As college-bound high school graduates await word of their state financial aid -- Cal Grants -- other kinds of help have begun to flow for students already enrolled in public colleges and universities.

It’s disturbing that we have so-called citizens in this country who wish to excuse and legitimize illegal immigration.  Had it not been for the federal judiciary forcing states to educate the children of illegal aliens at the public school level, we wouldn’t have these problems to begin with.

I applaud Reps. George Cleveland, R-Onslow, and Chris Whitmire, R-Transylvania for introducing House Bill 218 that would bar illegal aliens from attending state’s community colleges.  They - unlike the editors at these socialist papers – have the foresight to know what admission means to these invaders.  At least these public servants value citizenship.

Professor Spews the Virtues of Joseph Stalin

Do you want to know why someone like Barack Hussein Obama can win a second term, despite his policies of poverty and misery?  It all starts with education.  Here is a purveyor of lies, spewing the virtues of Joseph Stalin:

(CNSNews.com) – An English professor at Montclair State University said that during his years of research, he did not find “one crime” that communist leader Joseph Stalin committed.

“I have spent many years researching this and similar questions, and I have yet to find one crime, yet to find one crime that Stalin committed,” said professor Grover Furr, an author on Soviet history during the reign of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, during a debate hosted by Young Americans for Liberty at Montclair State University.

“Consensus Number seems to be between 100 and 150 million people killed by communist regimes, and I’m wondering, communism wasn’t successful. Do you think maybe that there’s an optimum number that if enough people were killed that it would be successful? Maybe a billion? Two billion?” an audience member asked Furr.

“Well, that’s not a serious question,” Furr said.

“Actually it is. Mass murder…” the audience member said.

“I’m going to answer you,” Furr said

“It’s a tool of the communist regime…” the audience member continued.

“I’m going to answer you,” Furr said.

“So they thought it worked. Did they not do it enough?” the audience member asked.

“I’m going to answer you,” Furr said.

“Okay,” the audience member said.

“Okay. Finished asking? I’m going to answer you. What you said is bullshit. It’s wrong. It’s a lie.

The history of the Soviet Union, the history of the Soviet Union is the most falsified. American history is falsified. Alright. I went to Canada for a number of years,” Furr said.

“The Canadian school system falsifies Canadian history, but of all the falsifications that go on in the school systems in this country, in this world, Soviet history is falsified the most. I have spent many years researching this and similar questions, and I have yet to find one crime, yet to find one crime that Stalin committed,” he added.

“I know they all say he killed 20, 30, 40 million people. It’s bullshit,” Furr said.

“Was it Goebbels that said it’s the big lie that’s successful?” the audience member asked.

“[Joseph] Goebbels said the big lie is successful. And this is the big lie. This is the big lie. That the communists, that Stalin killed millions of people and that socialism is no good. Just a word about socialist benefits – the United States has the lowest standard of living of any of the industrialized countries, and they all have some form of socialist health care, and you should have it too!”

We have a serious problem with our educational system.

College Graduates Will Rue the Day They Screamed for 'Hope and Change'

The Anointed One is becoming a broken record. His only solution to our country’s economic woes is government spending. He wants to dig a bigger hole of debt than we already have. Speaking of unfathomable debt, college graduates are having a hard time finding work.

(CNSNews.com) - There was a net decline of 406,000 in the number of Americans age 25 or older with a bachelor’s degree or higher who were working in the United States in June, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A net of 309,000 in this demographic simply dropped out of the labor force, which means they neither had a job in June nor actively tried to find one, according to BLS.

The number of Americans age 25 or older with a bachelor’s degree or higher who were “unemployed”—meaning they did not have a job but did actively try to find one—increased by 96,000 in June.

Our esteemed president has proposed a community college/private business initiative that would translate into jobs. The only problem is no one is hiring, and won’t until this fool is out of office.
If you college graduates think the cost of your education is an ordeal, just wait until the national debt kicks in. You will rue the day you screamed for Hope and Change.

Charlotte Observer Editor Uses Dickens-esque Demagoguery On Newt Gingrich

If there is one person who knows how to strike a raw nerve, it’s Newt Gingrich. After making a comment on the work ethic of poor families and their children, the progressives went apoplectic. Here is Newt’s “offensive” comment:

"Really poor children in really poor neighborhoods have no habits of working and nobody around them who works," Gingrich replied. "So they literally have no habit of showing up on Monday. They have no habit of staying all day. They have no habit of 'I do this and you give me cash,' unless it's illegal."

Gingrich went on to suggest that these kids should participate in a jobs program, so as to instill a practical work ethic. Of course, the reactionaries resorted to Dickens-esque demagoguery of children in workhouses slaving away for a spoonful of gruel.

Fannie Flono, a contributing editor at the Charlotte Observer, is typical of the fatuous intellect of the progressives. She begins her commentary:

Now that Newt Gingrich has brought it up, maybe it's time for a refresher course on the value of child labor laws. The Republican presidential candidate's claim that child labor laws are "truly stupid" rightly offends many people. But the bigger problem is that such a notion is intellectually feeble and flatulent. A guy who is notably smart and likes to publicly announce it with nearly every word and gesture should be wary of uttering such nonsense.

Fannie Flono went on to cite a republican and the Census Bureau without sourcing the article or study. So, we are left to trust her with the context and data of these reports. I’m sorry, but I’ve learned not to trust the leftwing media, and particularly the Charlotte Observer without verification. Here are Fannie Flono’s assertions:

In fact, even some Republicans disavowed the generalization and said U.S. Census data easily disprove the idea. Noted Ron Haskins, co-director of the Brookings Center on Children and Families and a former GOP congressional staff member: "Many [poor] mothers work," Haskins says. "If the economy were better, more would work, but they certainly have been setting an example."

According to the census, most poor children live in a household with at least one employed parent, and even among children in extreme poverty, nearly one in three lives with at least one working parent. In 2010 there were 9.9 million single mother households with children under age 18, representing about 85 percent of all single-parent families with children. More than 65 percent of those mothers were employed
.

It would have been nice to verify these “stats”. But unfortunately, I don’t have all night to run down rabbit holes. But what can be verified is the statistics of child labor before the Fair Standards Act of 1938. The participation of males aged 10 -15 in non-agricultural work in 1930 was 6.5%; for females it was 2.9%. The employment of children in industrial American was on the decline due to technological advances and compulsory educational requirements imposed by state governments.

The progressives/liberals would have us believe that employers of that period were the ones who exploited children, when in fact it was usually their families.

The continuation of child labor in industry in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, however, sparked controversy. Much of this ire was directed at employers, especially in industries where supervisors bullied children to work harder and assigned them to dangerous, exhausting or degrading jobs. In addition, working-class parents were accused of greedily not caring about the long-term well-being of their children. Requiring them to go to work denied them educational opportunities and reduced their life-time earnings, yet parents of laboring children generally required them to turn over all or almost all of their earnings. For example, one government study of unmarried young women living at home and working in factories and stores in New York City in 1907 found over ninety percent of those under age 20 turned all of their earnings over to their parents.

Fannie Flono then equates a good work ethic with education:

The work ethic Gingrich and others should focus on is in the classroom. Working hard on class work to boost academic performance is what will lift poor children out of poverty so they can become productive tax-paying citizens. Unraveling child labor laws can only lead to the kind of child victimization this country rightly ditched a century ago.

I agree with Ms. Flono on the premise that education is a good way to combat poverty, but it doesn’t instill a decent work ethic. All you have to do is read the complaints of employers and their dealings with today’s so-called “millennial generation”. These “kids” have an inflated sense of self. They have no regard for their employers or fellow employees. As a matter of fact, the OWS crowd personifies the attitude of these spoiled rotten brats; and that is something a college education can not correct.

N.C. Big Media Laments Dropout Rate at Big Education

Bring out the Kleenex. Pass the hanky. It’s time for another sob story from the editors at the Charlotte Observer, News & Observer, and what other observers that infest North Carolina. This time the victims of the big bad republican state legislators are college students. Apparently, the cuts in grants have caused some students to dropout:

This is a sad situation indeed, because the state's public university system long has been regarded as a jewel in the crown, its very existence a sacred promise that if you are a suitably qualified young person in North Carolina and you want to go to college, you can go.

The problem is, economic reality and a Republican-run legislature inexperienced in governing and apparently uninterested in the consequences of slashing budgets willy-nilly have combined to put, in this case, college students or potential students in a choking bind. Some will simply not be able to further their education.

Republicans passed up the continuation of a temporary sales tax that would have brought in more than $1 billion annually, money that could have helped college students and educators in the public schools and lots of other North Carolinians who are doing important things that benefit the state.

Our universities are the crown jewel of North Carolina? Maybe for out of work democratic politicians; and if you like your kids to be self-loathing Americans, then I can definitely say the university system is a top notch.

But as usual Big Media doesn’t question Big Education. The writer of this dribble never thought to ask why the cost of a college education is so expensive. No, this idiot rambles about a 1% sales tax, instead of tackling the real reasons why tuition has exceeded the rate of inflation:

According to figures obtained from the U.S. Department of Education, the Census Bureau and the College Board, tuition increased from the 2005-06 school year to the 2010-11 school year by 24 percent for a four-year public college, 17 percent for four-year private college and 11 percent for a two-year public college.

The rise in the cost of a college education significantly has outpaced inflation.

One of the reasons for the sharp rise of tuition is that universities have become labor intensive. The best example I found was from the Mises Institute. It’s a bit dated, written in 1998, but highly instructive:

Universities are labor-intensive places, and they have become more so. The number of faculty members has risen slightly faster than enrollments, and there has been an explosion in nonteaching staff. In the fall of 1976, universities nationwide had 31.5 administrators for every 1,000 students. By 1993 that number had grown to 51.4. By the mid-1990s, only about 35% of university employees actually taught students.

Assuming the quality of education and research has remained constant over time, there has been a significant decline in labor productivity in higher education--more people now do the same amount of work. Actually, they may do less work. At a typical state university, faculty members teach 250 hours or so a year; their counterparts in 1960 spent far more time in the classroom. Most of us today teach the same way Socrates did more than 2,300 years ago, albeit not as well. What other profession has had absolutely no productivity advance in 2,300 years?

A typical teacher at a medium-quality state university may spend 650 hours a year directly on the teaching function (including preparation, grading papers and advising), for perhaps $65,000 in salary and benefits, or about $100 an hour. Universities can afford such expensive labor in large part because of government subsidies. Students who are sensitive to price get scholarships, really a form of price discrimination. Meanwhile, costs soar for those paying full price.

While other industries have found ways to become more productive, the university system has become fat and lazy, which is easy to do when a huge portion of monies received comes from federal and state governments.
