Venezuelan President Threatens to Jail Business Owners

I read the following article, and it reminds of the same kind of rhetoric coming from the Democratic Party.  They haven’t threatened to throw business owners in jail, yet.  But we’ve heard their desires to confiscate their property and takeover whole industries.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is extending price controls and will place limits on profits as he extends attempts to curb the galloping inflation that is eroding support for his rule.

Maduro made the announcement in a late-night television address Sunday in which he also vowed to step up inspections of businesses selling shoes, clothing, automobiles and other goods to make sure they aren't gouging consumers.

"We can't just close the businesses; the owners have to go to jail," Maduro said in an impassioned speech in which he cited Jewish, Muslim and Christian texts to harangue businessmen he accuses of usury. "We can't allow our hard currency to be used to rob people through the sale of these goods."

Huge crowds of government loyalists and opponents formed outside appliance stores over the weekend after Maduro ordered the military to occupy the Daka chain of electronic stores and slash by more than half prices for washing machines, televisions and other white goods.

While soldiers with assault rifles were deployed to keep bargain hunters in check, at least one Daka store, in the country's third largest city of Valencia, was looted by unruly crowds, according to photos and videos posted online.

Maduro Sunday night urged Venezuelans to remain calm, saying that he won't allow the "parasitic bourgeoisie" to overcharge consumers ever again.

To that end, he vowed to place percentage limits on profit margins if congress approves a bill granting him special powers.

All tyrants want special powers.

Will the United States Implement a "Happiness Agency" Like Venezuela?

All of the statist in America looks to Venezuela as their model of governance.  Celebrities like Sean Penn, Harry Belafonte, and Oliver Stone look upon the likes of Hugo Chavez and his successor as beneficence personified.  Why this utopian country opened up a new government agency dedicated to the happiness of its people.  You can’t get better than that.

At first, many Venezuelans thought it was a joke: President Nicolas Maduro is creating a Deputy Ministry of Supreme Social Happiness.
The president says that the pediatrician in charge of the agency will coordinate all anti-poverty missions created by the late President Hugo Chavez.
Wags had a field day Friday, waxing sarcastic on Twitter about how happy they felt a day after the announcement.
Oil-rich Venezuela is chronically short of basic goods and medical supplies. Annual inflation is running officially at near 50 percent and the U.S. dollar now fetches more than seven times the official rate on the black market

Recently, a bunch of ingrates tried to assassinate Venezuela's Price Controls Minister.  I guess the black market was out of toilet paper.  Speaking of price controls, Rahm Emanuel’s brother, one of the architects of this monstrosity, confessed that Obamacare was designed to do just that.  You would've thought Americans would've learned their lesson by now.  We do have a history of this kind of crap.  I guess we're going to have to live through this pain one more time.

Can we expect a Happiness Agency in the United States?  The Obama administration may need one sooner than they think.

Obamacare Chaffs American Citizens

Today is the official day of the Obamacare fiasco.  Once again we are to live through the consequences of good intentions that most certainly will go bad.  Any time a government entity tries to implement price controls instead of allowing the free market to work, eventually leads to higher prices and shortages.

Democrats keep harping that Republicans are denying people access to affordable health care, when in fact it is their policies that are the real culprit.  The Cato Institute published a report in 2004 on the cost of health care regulations.  Here is an excerpt:

"Based on consensus estimates about the impact of higher prices on how many would likely drop health insurance, this increased cost implies a 3.8 percent reduction in the demand for coverage. This translates into 6.8 million uninsured whose plight arguably might be attributed to excess regulatory costs, or roughly one in six of the average daily uninsured."

And as for fraud and abuse:

"Even though the government collects $2.1 billion in enforcement penalties (treated here as a transfer), the gross cost of health care fraud and abuse regulation is estimated to be $3.2 billion, inclusive of government regulatory costs, industry compliance costs, and efficiency losses from tax collection and regulatory costs. All industry compliance costs (including enforcement penalties) are treated as roughly equivalent to an excise tax."

Progressives love centralized authority.  Recently, Venezuela took over a toilet paper factory because of shortages; shortages which the Venezuelan government caused through price controls.  Now their citizens are walking around with chaffed asses.  Soon the American people will be chaffed too.

Massachusetts Imposes Price Controls on Insurance Companies

Massachusetts state regulators have instituted price controls on health insurance, by blocking proposed rate increases by carriers. The insurers are currently waiting for an injunction from the court. They state that caps are justified only if health care providers are to receive the same treatment; as of now, no one looking for a new policy can buy or get a quote.

“We’re in limbo until the issue gets resolved,’’ said Lora Pellegrini, president of the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, a trade group representing most of the state’s insurance companies. “There are no approved rates in the market right now. You’re seeing the first sign of the kind of market chaos we were worried about.’’

This being an election year, Governor Deval Patrick is using the proposed rate increases as a wedge issue against his republican opponent Charles Barker. Barker is a former president of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.

Insurance Commissioner Joseph Murphy rejected 235 of 274 rate increases by the industry. Harvard Pilgrim had 25 out of 26 that met the same fate.

Barack Obama and his fellow democrats used Massachusetts as the premier model for the nation. The way it looks, if Deval Patrick and his cronies get their way, private insurance companies will be driven out of the state; and with Obamacare coming down the pike we could witness the extinction of the industry as a whole.

People bemoan the “injustice” of insurance companies. It is state and federal regulations that are driving up the cost. But for some reason people look upon these politicians and bureaucrats as our saviors, when in fact they are the ones who are putting the yoke around our necks
