Department of Energy's Billion Dollar Babies

The Department of Energy is at it again. They just approved another billion dollar boondoggle to shady green energy companies:

Update: The Energy Department on Wednesday approved federal loan guarantees for two green energy projects totaling more than $1 billion. It approved $337 million for a Mesquite Solar project in Arizona and $737 million for a Solar Reserve project in Nevada. The projects would create a total of 52-55 permanent jobs, according to earlier DOE figures and company statements. That's about $20 million per permanent job.

$20 million per job! This is an outrage. The DOE throws money around as if it grows on trees. They obviously have no regard for taxpayer largess. After all, they didn’t work for that money.

And here is a tribute to those billion dollar babies. Soon to be trillion dollar babies:

Green Police Eat One of Their Own

The Green Police just hammered one of their own.  A Great Britain research facility that specializes in carbon free energy was smacked across the face with a green tax bill:

The unexpected impact of the government's carbon reduction commitment (CRC) scheme is so severe that scientists and research funders have lobbied ministers for an exemption to reduce the bills.

Among the worst hit is the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy in Oxfordshire, a facility for research into almost limitless carbon-free energy. The lab faces an estimated £400,000 payment next year, raising the spectre of job losses and operational cuts. "Considering our research is aimed at producing zero-carbon energy, it seems ironic and perverse to clobber us with an extra bill," a senior scientist at the lab said. "We have to use electricity to run the machine and there is no way of getting around that."

And of course the attitude by these Progressives is that they should be exempt from this green tax, because they’re special:

"This [tax] will have a negative impact on important research into low carbon energy sources and that cannot be the right consequence of a policy the government is pursuing to promote a low carbon economy," said Sue Ferns, head of research at Prospect. "There is a potential for the scheme to impact on employment and it adds to pressures to run the equipment less. Even if it doesn't lead to substantial job losses, these are world-class scientists and every job, every piece of research makes a difference."

What about the job losses that other businesses face because of this boondoggle?  I guess they aren’t as important as these climate change grifters whose research is dependent on sucking the life blood out of reputable businesses.

Welcome to the policies that you helped to create.  Maybe your research is worthy enough to warrant investors to help pay your bills; but I doubt it.  Chances are they will get a waiver.  I guess Progressive cronyism is just as popular in Britain as it is in the United States.

Stimulus Bill Pays For Foreign Green Jobs

It seems that most of the Stimulus money that was to pay for "green jobs" went overseas. I hope Congressman Larry Kissell reads this. But first a little excerpt from his JOBS brochure:

Putting Amerians back to work is Congressman Kissell's first priority. Kissell believes small businesses and 'green' manufacturing can put us back on track.

It looks like 'green' manufacturing did put people to work...mostly in foreign countries. Here is the article, courtesy of Newsmax.

By: John Rossomando

Although Barack Obama and other Democrats touted the $787 billion stimulus package as a way to create green jobs that would put Americans back to work, new reports show the spending package has mostly created green jobs for foreign workers.

U.S. Department of Energy statistics show 79 percent of the $2.1 billion in stimulus money allocated for wind energy has been paid to foreign manufacturers. The Spanish company Iberdrola has received $443 million; the Portuguese company EDP has received $229 million; and the British company Terra Firma, which bought a large wind farm in western Pennsylvania, received $42 million.

Analysts worry the stimulus funds will also help create manufacturing jobs in China, and a Texas consortium’s plans to build a wind farm that primarily will rely on Chinese-made turbines using $450 million in stimulus money underscores this fear A report from the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University found 80 percent of the stimulus money had created 6,000 jobs, and only a small percentage of those jobs went to American workers.

Only two American companies ̶ General Electric Energy and Clipper Wind ̶ are major wind turbine manufacturers, and the American Wind Energy Associations has said the United States saw a drop in the number of wind turbine manufacturing jobs last year.
