No Disposable Income in an Obama Economy? Have a Staycation!

Remember the days when American families packed their cars, loaded up the kids and went on a week vacation away from home? Those days are becoming a fabled pastime. The Obama economy has rendered many households with less disposable income. And with the changing times, comes a new concept: staycations.

For American families with kids in the household, 82 percent are planning a summer staycation. Of those respondents, 64 percent plan to enhance their getaway with a visit to a nearby amusement attraction, including water and theme parks.

These results indicate that, despite high gas prices, American families are shaking off the lingering affects of the recession and many are planning to upgrade their staycation by spending money on simple perks that will improve their overall experience.

"We're glad to see that while consumers are still carefully considering their summer vacation plans in the current economy, most are choosing to spend a little more on destinations and activities that will bring families and friends closer together," said Kalahari spokesperson, Travis Nelson. "This survey shows that American families can still economize while creating quality, shared experiences and memories that will last a lifetime."

Other activities planned by families on their summer staycations include:

46 percent plan to attend a nearby festival or concert
41 percent plan to visit a local museum
36 percent plan to eat out at restaurants more often
20 percent plan to get a spa treatment
13 percent plan to schedule a golf outing
11 percent have other planned activities
6 percent do not plan to spend on activities that cost money

What's more, the survey found that 70 percent of respondents from the Midwest plan to take a staycation. Of those respondents, 45 percent plan to visit a nearby amusement attraction, including water and theme parks.

And while you and your family sit at home planning a trip to the local fair, the Obama’s are partying like its 2008. But hey, they deserve a break. It’s a lot of work telling the rest of us how to live our lives.

Obama Leaves North Carolina's Unemployed in the Ditch

If you listen to the Obama administration, you would think that the “Great Recession” was over, and this country’s economic woes are in our rearview mirror, as we fishtail out of the ditch. But that simply isn’t so in North Carolina.

Raleigh, N.C. — The recession in 2008 and 2009 hurt employment levels in North Carolina, but the state’s current unemployment rate near double digits reflects more than a decade of stagnant job creation. North Carolina has fewer jobs now than in 1999, according to a new report from consulting firm South By North Strategies.

Even though North Carolina’s population has soared over the past 12 years, the state has 11,700 fewer jobs, the firm says.

“While the image of North Carolina as a state growing rapidly in population and jobs was very much an accurate one in the 1990s, it no longer holds,” the report notes. “In fact, North Carolina has not recorded any net job growth over the past 12 years, despite adding residents.”
In 2011, North Carolina added 19,600 jobs. The private sector created 29,400 positions, but the public sector cut 9,800 jobs, the report says.

And if you thought that was depressing, the unemployment rate is projected to hold at 9 to 10 percent. But hey, don’t listen to the experts. The Messiah says we are doing just fine. And isn’t that what counts?

U.S. Poverty Rate Highest in 52 Years

When Obama and the democrats decided to follow the FDR economic model, you just new things wouldn’t turn out well. Now we have a poverty rate, unlike any other since the U.S. Census Bureau began gathering data:

The U.S. poverty rate rose to the highest level in almost two decades and household income fell in 2010, underscoring the lingering impact of the worst economic slump in seven decades.

Data released by the Census Bureau today showed the proportion of people living in poverty climbed to 15.1 percent last year from 14.3 percent in 2009, and median household income declined 2.3 percent. The number of Americans living in poverty was the highest in the 52 years since the U.S. Census Bureau began gathering that statistic. Those figures may have worsened in recent months as the economy weakened.

“Families are struggling to put food on the table, and they don’t have the purchasing power to help the economy recover,” said Isabel Sawhill, a senior fellow at the
Brookings Institution in Washington.

We now have 46.2 million people who’ve descended into the ranks of poverty. The 1930’s was called the Great Depression for a reason. Unfortunately, those in power haven’t learned from history and have condemned all of us to repeat it.
