DNC Stiffs Duke Energy on $10 Million Loan

I wonder what the odds were in Vegas that the Democratic National Convention would have paid back a $10 million loan guarantee issued by Duke Energy for their shindig in Charlotte.  Today, the energy company issued a statement to its shareholders that they got stiffed, but they’re able to write off $6 million as a tax write off.  There’s one tax loophole the Democrats should be thankful for.

The $4 million loss is a drop in the bucket compared to the $200 million in Stimulus money they received, along with $125 million in tax credits granted by the Department of Energy.  Oh, and let’s not forget the $460 million Duke received from federal, local and state governments as incentives to build a power plant in Indiana.

All in all, it pays to be a political entrepreneur.  I wonder if there is a Grafter Union for big business.

Activist Already Protesting in Charlotte, NC

An air of discontent is spreading through the rank and file of the Democratic Party. Protestors are streaming into the Queen City with their hand painted signs. What’s notable about these malcontents is their association with environmental groups. The very constituency that Obama and the DNC have pandered to for years.

The sidewalk demonstration was orchestrated by the environmental group Greenpeace and the Coalition to March on Wall Street, an umbrella organization of about 70 groups planning to protest at the Sept. 4-6 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.

Greenpeace field organizer Monica Embrey said Duke is aligned with the DNC, the chief fundraising organization for the party.

Duke, which recently merged with Progress Energy to form the largest U.S. utility, has used its size and influence to impact the Democratic Party, Embrey said.

For instance, she noted that Duke had given an in-kind donation of $1 million worth of donated office space for the DNC in advance of the convention.

Charlotte is in for a rude awakening. All of those Obamabots with their 2012 bumper stickers will be running for cover when the shit hits the fan. Welcome to the big leagues “uptown” crowd.

DNC Tells Charlotte Businesses to Become Union or Go Away

When the Democratic National Committee announced that their 2012 convention was to be held in the Queen City, Charlotte’s “uptown” crowd celebrated. Oh, what a grand time it will be for local businesses. Money will be made and the unemployed will have a job. It will be a boon for all in Mecklenburg County, which has an unemployment rate of 10.5%. But things aren’t what they seem.

North Carolina is a right to work state. That is in direct conflict with the Democrats biggest special interest group and contributor: unions. And local businesses are finding out the powerful hold they have on this political party. Many contracts are being awarded to out of state companies. Some have partnered with local businesses, which have heavy minority employees. But the overall tone is if you’re not union either become one or go away.

RedState.com tells the tale of a northern refugee who escaped the corrupting influence of unions. John, who worked in construction, moved to North Carolina because it was a right to work state. He found a job with Heritage Printing and Graphics. Here is short excerpt of what John experienced when he solicited business from the DNC:

According to John, statistically speaking based on their size and clientele, it was a fair bet that Heritage could land at least 25% of the available work which he estimated to be about $1 million.

After continually receiving no return phone calls from the people that would review bids and determine vendors, John started working harder to land the business. Donuts that he would send to their offices would be eaten, thank you’s would be said, but still no follow ups. No call backs. No business.

Finally, confused and bewildered, John reached out to someone he knew that might be able to help. He was so shocked and upset at what he was told by this person, that he felt he had to tell the story. I spoke with him today.

The person that John spoke to is an executive on the
Charlotte in 2012 Host Committee who are central to the planning of the convention and how things will operate in Charlotte. There are only a handful of executive members of this committee, but John refrained from naming anyone specific. Ultimately, which one it is may not matter. What does matter is how the conversation went. According to John, he approached this person to see why he couldn’t get any traction with the committee.

They responded by asking him, “John, are you a union shop?” When John told him he was not, the Committee member told him, “We were just told that we cannot accept bids unless they are from companies that are unionized.”

“Cannot? Or will not?,” John asked. ”Cannot,” was the response he got.

Anyone who has escaped the unionized North can relate to John. Southerners call us Yankee transplants, when in fact we are refugees.

So, bask in the glow of your accomplishment “uptown” crowd. The Democrats may just throw a few crumbs your way.

Duke Energy Guarantees $10 Million Loan for Democratic Convention

Duke Energy has agreed to underwrite the 2012 Democratic Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. The line of credit is worth $10 million dollars:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Duke Energy Corp., one of Charlotte's biggest companies, is guaranteeing a $10 million line of credit for the 2012 Democratic National Convention, The Charlotte Observer reported Saturday.

The guarantee would put Duke Energy's stockholders — not Duke's electric customers — at risk if the Democratic National Committee defaults on the loan, said company spokesman Tom Williams.

It’s the least they could do for the company’s biggest benefactor. Duke received $204 million in Stimulus Money from the Democratic Party and Obama regime:

The Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Duke Energy has signed the agreement to formalize the $204 million in economic stimulus funds it will receive from the federal government, the power provider said Thursday.

Duke said it will use the funds from the Department of Energy to modernize its power distribution system and install digital equipment on the transmission system in the Carolinas. It said the funding will save or create about 1,000 jobs in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and the Carolinas.

The grant is part of $3.4 billion in government support for 100 projects announced in October.

Duke Energy Corp. is one of the nation's largest power generators with 4 million customers in the Carolinas and the Midwest.

What’s $10 million amongst friends? Or should I say the taxpayers?

Union Thugs Not Happy With DNC Pick of Charlotte, NC

The 2012 Democratic Convention is coming to the Queen City and the union thugs are not happy with the selection. North Carolina is a right to work state, and for Charlotte to be picked is an affront to the socialist movement. However, the bid proposal promised to hire as many Marxist as possible:

Charlotte's bid proposal says the city will "endeavor to use union labor to the greatest extent feasible" but provides no detail on how that will happen.

Because the city has so few unionized workers - perhaps 3 percent - it's unclear how much of the pie labor unions can expect to grab. Roughly 3.5 percent of North Carolina workers are unionized.

The Democratic Party has the ultimate say as to who will work at the convention and since they are beholden to the unions, some are worried that outside labor will be brought into the state:

Angaza Laughinghouse, president of the N.C. Public Service Workers Union, said he doesn't support bringing in outside workers. He said, he plans to use the convention to "share with the world how workers here are being denied the fundamental human right to collectively bargain and have a voice." In North Carolina, it's illegal for public employees to bargain for wages or benefits collectively.

That’s because many who have moved from states dominated by unions; don’t want to see North Carolina turned into a hell hole like the one they escaped from. Can anyone say Michigan or California?

Colbert of The Employers Association said he is advising nonunionized companies to start preparing now. He said employers would be wise to analyze their pay rates, benefits packages and training programs to ensure they match industry standards.

"This would be a prime time for unions to make their promises. It's natural that while they're here they would try to drum up some business,"

As though Charlotte and Mecklenburg County wasn’t dysfunctional enough already.

Charlotte, North Carolina Awarded 2012 Democratic Convention

Charlotte, North Carolina has been selected to host the 2012 National Democratic Convention. Mayor Anthony Foxx has dubbed the event the People’s Convention. I couldn’t agree more. When I think of Democrats, I think of red flags. I wonder if they will fly one in honor of the occasion.

Community leaders are itching to show off this “world class” cosmopolitan. Anyone who has lived within a couple of hundred miles of the Queen City would recognize the neurotic preoccupation the “uptown” crowd has with this status:

Charlotte leaders hailed the selection.

"We're honored that the Democratic National Committee chose Charlotte," Mayor Anthony Foxx said in a statement. "We have an unmatched opportunity to show the world what a beautiful, energetic, innovative and diverse city we are building in Charlotte."

Gov. Bev Perdue called the decision "fantastic news for North Carolina regardless of your political party. A national political convention is a keystone event that will boost North Carolina's economy, while showcasing Charlotte and our state to the nation and the world."

The convention is expected to bring more than 35,000 delegates, media and other visitors to the city and generate more than $150 million in economic benefits. It also will bring international attention to a city that has long aspired to be "world-class.

Foxx had called the convention "a game-changer, bringing new jobs, new spending and new businesses to our city, region and state."

The local NAACP recently called Charlotte another Ku Klux Klan backwater. And that the Queen's robes are really bed sheets:

The president of the Charlotte NAACP, Rev. Kojo Nantambu, led a rally at the Government Center in uptown where he called the city racist.

Nantambu said, "We're going to start having marches with national figures cause we want to put the national spotlight on Charlotte to show just how racist Charlotte is."

I wonder if the Rev. Kojo Nantambu will join his fellow jackasses in the convention center, or march with all of the other leftist nut jobs that will invade this city. Either way, we can expect a “world class” leftist fiasco.
