Liberals Inundate North Carolina with Campaign Ads

Does anyone remember the not too distant past when progressives lamented the influence of money in our electoral process?  I mean, the very people who bemoaned this untoward practice of outsiders meddling into local campaigns are the same ones funneling money as a means to influence policy in another state.  What a bunch of hypocrites!

North Carolina is a veritable battleground state.  Interest groups from all over the country have decided to put their two cents plus a couple of million dollars into our gubernatorial race.  Most of this money is from liberal organizations.  Here is an excerpt from the News and Observer:

An estimated $3.7 million from 11 groups has been spent on TV ads highlighting the environment, economy and House Bill 2’s LGBT rights controversy. The center reports the money is coming from the national governors associations, Americans for Prosperity and a North Carolina coalition of environmental groups.

To date, no other state-level race has drawn as many outside spenders.

Candidates, political parties and outside organizations have spent more than $53 million on state-level broadcast TV ads nationally, the Center reports. Outside spending accounts for almost 40 percent of that.

You have to read the front groups that proclaim they’re from North Carolina.  Some of this is truly hilarious such as the N.C. Waste Awareness & Reduction Network which is funded by Ben & Jerry’s Foundation; the rock group Crosby, Stills & Nash and a bunch of weirdoes from a nonprofit called the Guacamole Fund.

This is going to be a long, painful election season.

Elizabeth Warren's Let's Be Like China Ad

Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate wants us to be more like China. After all, they’re the paragon of economic stimulus programs:

"We've got bridges and roads in need of repair and thousands of people in need of work. Why aren’t we rebuilding America?” Warren says in the 30-second ad. “Our competitors are putting people to work, building a future. China invests 9 percent of its GDP in infrastructure. America? We’re at just 2.4 percent. We can do better. We can build a foundation for a strong new economy and get people to Massachusetts to work right now."

Careful what you wish for Ms. Warren. You might just get it:

A nearly 330-foot-long section of a ramp of the eight-lane Yangmingtan Bridge in the city of Harbin dropped 100 feet to the ground. Four trucks plummeted with it, resulting in three deaths and five injuries.

The 9.6-mile bridge is one of three built over the Songhua River in that area in the past four years. China’s economic stimulus program in 2009 and 2010 helped the country avoid most of the effects of the global economic downturn, but involved incurring heavy debt to pay for the rapid construction of new bridges, highways and
high-speed rail lines all over the country.

Questions about the materials used during the construction and whether the projects were properly engineered have been the subject of national debate ever since a high-speed train plowed into the back of a stopped train on the same track on July 23 last year in the eastern city of Wenzhou. The crash killed 40 people and injured 191; a subsequent investigation blamed in particular
flaws in the design of the signaling equipment.

I believe we should roll that China train down to crawl, Ms. Warren.

Mom, Dad.... I'm a Socialist

And after many years of reflection, introspection and reading history, this young man will say to himself: "What in the hell was I thinking? Man, I was an idiot!"

And that's why thinking adults are not democrats.

Barack Obama Should Have Disclaimer

Barack Obama is again compelled to bash corporations. He has an unhealthy outlook on the United States, and particularly free speech and enterprise.

It's alright if his anti-American minions place ads and hide behind shadowy 527 programs, but God forbid a corporation runs an advertisement to defend themselves against an unscrupulous politician.

Maybe Obama should have a disclaimer every time he appears on television: funded by SEIU, The Teachers Union and George Soros.

Remarks of President Barack Obama
Weekly Address
August 21, 2010

As the political season heats up, Americans are already being inundated with the usual phone calls, mailings, and TV ads from campaigns all across the country. But this summer, they’re also seeing a flood of attack ads run by shadowy groups with harmless-sounding names. We don’t know who’s behind these ads and we don’t know who’s paying for them.

The reason this is happening is because of a decision by the Supreme Court in the Citizens United case – a decision that now allows big corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money to influence our elections. They can buy millions of dollars worth of TV ads – and worst of all, they don’t even have to reveal who is actually paying for them. You don’t know if it’s a foreign-controlled corporation. You don’t know if it’s BP. You don’t know if it’s a big insurance company or a Wall Street Bank. A group can hide behind a phony name like “Citizens for a Better Future,” even if a more accurate name would be “Corporations for Weaker Oversight.”

We tried to fix this last month. There was a proposal supported by Democrats and Republicans that would’ve required corporate political advertisers to reveal who’s funding their activities. When special interests take to the airwaves, whoever is running and funding the ad would have to appear in the advertisement and take responsibility for it – like a company’s CEO or an organization’s biggest contributor. And foreign-controlled corporations and entities would be restricted from spending money to influence American elections – just as they were in the past.

You would think that making these reforms would be a matter of common sense. You’d think that reducing corporate and even foreign influence over our elections wouldn’t be a partisan issue.

But the Republican leaders in Congress said no. In fact, they used their power to block the issue from even coming up for a vote.

This can only mean that the leaders of the other party want to keep the public in the dark. They don’t want you to know which interests are paying for the ads. The only people who don’t want to disclose the truth are people with something to hide.

Well, we cannot allow the corporate takeover of our democracy. So we’re going to continue to fight for reform and transparency. And I urge all of you to take up the same fight. Let’s challenge every elected official who benefits from these ads to defend this practice or join us in stopping it.
