Tucson's Memorial Pep Rally Service

I am completely appalled at what happened at the Tucson, Arizona Memorial Service. The wild cheers and the screaming and clapping was inappropriate. This is supposed to be a solemn event; it turned into a pep rally. I’ve been to memorial services before, and I don’t ever recall a cheering section. Granted I’m sure there are plenty of S.O.B.’s out there who deserve the pom-poms and bullhorns; not one of the victims in Tucson deserved this kind of behavior.

What did the Democrats do? Did they bus in a bunch of SEIU thugs? Is there no reverence for the dead?

Let’s take a look at the itinerary:

The schedule for tonight’s event, as released by the University of Arizona:

– Opening music

– Native American blessing

– Welcome by UA President Robert N. Shelton

– Playing of the National Anthem

– Remarks by President Shelton

– Remarks by UA Student

– Remarks by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer

– Remarks by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano

– Remarks by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder

– Moment of silence

Native American blessing? Really? I’m surprised we didn’t have a Snickers Candy Bar moment, with of course the exception of a Christian participating. After all, they might have been sued by the ACLU.

What an appalling event. These people should be ashamed of themselves. Except that shame is foreign to this crowd.

I agree! I was shocked and uncomfortable watching it. WOW, how inappropriate!

The author missed the point - that a memorial service should be a celebration of a person's life.
What would she have them do - dress in black and shriek at god at how unjust the world he gave us is?
As Jesus said, "Let the dead bury the dead".

They were celebrating someone's life all right. And it sure as hell wasn't the deceased.

Couldn't agree more. Live in AZ, but NOT Tucson. Was out and about during the memorial, but listened to it (on the radio) when I was in my car. My first reaction when I heard the the cheering, clapping and hoots, was "wasn't this supposed to be a memorial"? And YES! I do expect people to dress in black, or at least a dark color, including, and ESPECIALLY the First Lady of the US!

You simply don't understand Tucson. And to the person who lives in AZ but NOT in Tucson, yes we are different than the rest of the state (thank God!). You don't understand the rich cultural diversity here that honors their dead with celebration, not bowed almost ashamedly-reverent mid-western christian attitude. People were cheering because of the relief they felt from the memorial, because of the solidarity we feel as a community and to celebrate the lives lost. Who are you to tell people how they are supposed to grieve? I liked the Yaqui prayer at the start. Remember, the white anglos were the first illegal immigrants in this country. And this certainly wasn't a "pep rally." I think Obama was also uncomfortable with the cheering. So let's all get a life and quit bitching about people who are different and start making a better life for Americans.
